Stephen Magrath

Statement

I work principally in drawing , printing and painting on paper , aluminium , perspex and board with dimensions ranging from postcard-size to 10 metre long installations .

My practice is inspired by my interest in health and such areas as human microbiology , neuroscience and psychiatry deepened through collaborations with practitioners and researchers in these fields .
It finds form as explorations of the inner body , mind and consciousness presented through figuration and abstraction . My intention is to avoid clinical imagery in favour of the expressive and poignant in encouraging public discourse around physical , mental and spiritual wellbeing .
( see my video 'Shine a Light' at Links ) .

I have exhibited widely and have a number of artworks in public institutions and the Wellcome Image Library ( see Links ).

I extend my interest in 'health' and the interface of art , science and spirituality by leading projects involving workshops and exhibitions with schools and community groups throughout the SouthWest . These are intended to provide a forum for engaging with challenging issues such as regenerative medicine, dementia and depression/anxiety .

I am also a part-time art teacher at a local school for children with learning difficulties , working in a therapeutic context with students with Autism , Downs Syndrome and Cerebral Palsy (see Community Art )
